Frequently Asked Questions

Art Therapy is a form of psychotherapy practiced by a qualified mental health professional. The creative art therapist provides support for the individual during an art making session. This might involve a directive which uses drawing, painting, scultping clay, writing, or playing with sand. Sometimes it might be difficult for people to find words that explain their challenges and how they are feeling. Art Therapy is an expressive process where these individuals are able to feel safe and explore their difficult emotions with support from the art therapist.

Art Therapy looks quite different from that of an art class or art lesson. It is a creative process to explore and express feelings that are difficult to talk about. This means there is no right or wrong way to draw or be creative. It allows each person to find a novel pathway to use a combination of art materials in a safe, colorful and sometimes messy space!

Anyone can benefit from Art Therapy from those living with a disability, neurodiversity, or mental illness to people experiencing grief and loss, challenges at school or home, relationship issues and more. It is a personal journey where you can take control of your own life through creative techniques using art media such as paint and brush, pencils and paper.

There is a growing body of evidence which suggests that Art Therapy significantly helps people in navigating their own journey towards improving their mental health and wellbeing.
